How I Did Mexico

I spent a few unforgettable days in Mexico, exploring the beautiful coastline south of Cancún and venturing inland as well, thanks to an invitation from my friend, Becki, who has been wintering in Playa del Carmen for the past seven or so years. She thoughtfully organized our entire itinerary, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing—it was perfect from start to finish...including the food!
Base: Playa del Carmen (PDC)
Transportation: Rented a car
⸻
Day 1
Cenote Dos Ojos
Swam in both “eyes,” which completely satisfied my visit (you can also dive here). The two eyes are partially enclosed and one has the most stunning turquoise water.
Tulum Mayan Ruins
Absolutely incredible views from the seaside cliffs—and so many iguanas 🙌🏻😆
Dinner in Akumal
Dinner with a view at La Buena Vida. The food is amazing, you can stay as long as you like, and there are hammocks right on the beach. I got the stuffed avocado halves and it was so good!

⸻
Day 2
Ek Balam Mayan Ruins
Comparable to Chichén Itzá, but far less crowded—and you’re actually allowed to climb the ruins.
Cenote X’Canche (near Ek Balam)
Right next to the ruins. You can zip-line and rappel here, which makes it extra fun.
Cenote Suytun
Totally enclosed and incredibly unique, with a single pillar of natural light shining down.
Dinner in Valladolid—opt for the back patio, and don’t miss the nachos at Yakunaj Cocina Mexicana.

⸻
Day 3
Beach day at Paamul Beach Club
There’s a 500-peso minimum (about $25) for food, which covers the cost. What I loved most is that it’s a private, quiet beach—no vendors approaching you. The food is great, especially the guacamole.
Evening
Walk along Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) in PDC. There’s shopping and street shows

More Food
Dinner in PDC at Moshe Cube. The chicken shawarma is amazing!
Zo'Zen Yogurt in PDC was literally the BEST frozen yogurt I have ever had!
